A Microphone is a device that captures audio by converting sound waves into an electrical signal. Microphones enable many types of audio recording devices for purposes including communications of many kinds, as well as music and speech recording. Since dynamic microphones use a simple design, they are typically very durable and do not require electrical power. Condenser – Condenser Microphones are commonly used for audio recording purposes.

What Are Another Word For Microphone?

A Microphone is known with other names are Crystal Microphone, Crystal Mike, Condenser Microphone, Capacitor Mike, Capacitor Microphone, Directional Mike, Contact Microphone, Contact Mike, Directional Microphone, Condenser Mike.

Why Is It Called A Microphone?

The term ‘Microphone‘ can be broken into two parts ‘micro‘ and ‘phone‘. ‘ Micro (from Greek mikros) means “small” and phone (from Greek phone) means “sound” or “voice.” Microphone translates to “small sound,” which is accurate, as the Microphone deals with small audio signals.

How Does The Microphone Works?

A Microphone converts sound wave into a small electrical current. Sound waves hit a diaphragm that vibrates, moving a magnet near a coil. In some designs, the coil moves within a magnet. Other Microphones, such as condenser Microphones, work on the principle of capacitance.

What Are The Advantages Of A Microphone?

Following are the benefits or advantages of Microphone:

  1. It is faster to provide voice as input using microphone than to type text using keyboard.
  2. Sound waves can be manipulated in real time.
  3. It can help in improving safety and security of drivers and riders when used with voice activation systems e.g. switching on radio, keeping phone in speaker mode etc.
  4. They are inexpensive in general.
  5. Most of the microphones tolerate extreme high sound pressure levels.
  6. Microphone is rugged in construction.
  7. It does not require power supply except few. For example dynamic microphone does not need a battery.
  8. Condenser microphone: It is very sensitive and hence preferred for vocal recordings.

What Are The Disadvantages Of A Microphone?

Following are the drawbacks or disadvantages of Microphone:

  1. Sound files require large memory for storage for further processing and use.
  2. Voice recognition software is not accurate as manual typing. For example, it can not distinguish between “there” and “their”.
  3. Sound signals are required to be amplified for proper reconstruction. Hence amplifiers are needed. For example, dynamic microphone requires pre-amplifier.
  4. It has reduced performance at high frequencies.
  5. Condenser microphone: It is very sensitive and hence it could pick up undesired background noise.

There are different types of microphones with each having their respective advantages and disadvantages. The above mentioned are generic advantages of microphone and generic disadvantages of microphone.
